Steve Wierenga

President/Owner

Steve Wierenga is a highly experienced wellbore integrity specialist and geotechnical logging expert with over 35 years in the energy services and water well industries. As President and Technical Consultant of That Wireline Guy (a division of 811774 Alberta Ltd.) since 2016, he leads two focused divisions from Calgary, Alberta:

  • Geotechnical Division: Delivering precise groundwater surveys and advanced water well eLogging services to support sustainable water resource management.

  • Engineering Consulting Division: Providing expert cased hole well integrity log analysis for the energy sector, specializing in cement bond logs (CBL), SCVL, CIT, zonal hydraulic isolation, sustained annular flow/casing pressure source identification, and casing integrity evaluations—ensuring safety, regulatory compliance, and effective abandonments.

 

Steve has driven key innovations, including the joint development and commercialization of the IntegraView second casing string acoustic cement bond locator tool (with Downhole Sonic Solutions) and the Transient Electromagnetic (TEM) survey business unit. He offers specialized consulting on ultra-high temperature cement bond evaluation for SAGD and geothermal wells across North America and New Zealand, along with corporate training in well integrity and logging.

 

His career highlights include executive leadership roles building cased hole wireline operations at Pure Energy Services (FMC Technologies), where he grew the division to >50 units across Canada and the USA, as well as positions at Delaney Energy Services and Baker Hughes. A certified Oilwell Perforators Blaster Instructor with Energy Safety Canada since 2017, he has served as a technical advisor and industry representative on Canadian explosives regulations with Alberta OH&S, British Columbia WorkSafe, and NRCan.

 

A multiple Enserva Distinguished Volunteer Award recipient (2011–2024), Steve is an active member of SPE, SPWLA, CWLS, WIA Society, NGWA, AWWDA, and other professional associations. Passionate about technical innovation, mentoring, and safe operations, he proudly serves clients throughout Western Canada and internationally through That Wireline Guy.

Ian Cameron, P.Eng

Senior Log Analysis & Engineering

Ian Cameron, P.Eng., is a seasoned well integrity consultant with over 40 years in the oilfield industry, spanning operating companies, service providers, and executive roles. Since August 2022, he has been the Senior Well Integrity Consultant at That Wireline Guy in Salmon Arm, B.C., specializing in:

  • Cased hole well integrity log analysis (SCVL, CBL, CIT)

  • Open & cased hole lithology log interpretation

  • Well file reviews and SCVL remediation recommendations

  • Training services for well integrity and SCVL logging/remediation

 

Ian excels in technical sales, business development, abandonments, and cement evaluation, with key past roles including Executive VP & COO at Canadian Sub-Surface Energy Services (growing it to >500 employees), Executive Technical Sales at FMC Technologies, VP at Quantum Petrophysics, and Senior Logging Engineer at Schlumberger.

A recipient of the SPE International Award for Distinguished Contribution to Petroleum Engineering in Formation Evaluation (Canadian Region, 2014), he has presented extensively (e.g., AER cement bond training, SPE workshops), founded the Airdrie Oilmen’s Association, and volunteered widely with SPE, WIA Society, and community initiatives.

Ian combines strong analytical skills, leadership, and an extensive industry network to deliver practical solutions for well integrity, abandonments, and regulatory compliance—serving clients in Western Canada and beyond.

Kirk Vensel, P.Geoph

Senior Geophysicist

Kirk Vensel, P.Geoph., is a senior geophysicist with over 30 years of experience in seismic and electromagnetic imaging, project management, and business development across North America, South America, and the Middle East.

Since March 2026, he serves as Senior Geophysicist at That Wireline Guy in Calgary, Alberta, where he leads:

  • Transient Electromagnetic (TEM) surveys using systems like the ABEM GroundTEM Ralli for rapid, high-resolution subsurface mapping

  • Survey design, data processing, and electromagnetic imaging

  • Consulting on geophysical exploration methods for groundwater, near-surface, and environmental applications

  • Bringing innovative GroundTEM ralli geo-surveying systems to the Canadian market— a first in Alberta for local farm and groundwater exploration

 

Previously, Kirk held leadership roles including Director of Geosciences at Divestco (managing teams in Calgary, Bogota, Houston, and Kuwait), and various positions at CGG/Veritas Geophysical (1993–2016), where he built top-performing land geophysics teams, drove business development, and advanced technologies in depth imaging, multi-component, and 4D seismic.

He also develops wavefield analysis tools and has coded over 40 technical indicators in Python/C at Qcwave.

A Professional Geophysicist (#48323) with APEGA, member of SEG and CSEG, Kirk combines strong technical expertise, leadership, and mentoring to deliver innovative geophysical solutions—serving clients in Western Canada and internationally.

Stephen Bryant

Well Integrity Log Analyst

Stephen Bryant is a highly experienced E-Line and wireline operations leader with over 30 years in Western Canada’s oil & gas completions sector.

As an Operations and District Manager (Grande Prairie, AB & Fort St John, BC), he managed field crews, dispatching, explosive inventories, NRCan reporting, equipment troubleshooting, and provides technical support for advanced wireline logging analysis including Radial Bond Logs (RBL), Noise/Temperature surveys, Temperature Injection Profiles, and Radial Cement Bond Evaluation Logs.

His career includes progressive leadership roles as Operations Manager (Versa-Line), Supervisor III (Liberty Wireline), District Manager (Eclipse E-Line Services), Completions Manager (Downton’s Completions), Field Service Manager (Nine Energy Service), and earlier supervisory/management positions at Bonnetts Energy, Smart Completions, Lonkar Services, and IPS. Expert in plug & perf operations, Dyna/Hunting/G&H gun systems, tool rebuilding, log QC, and multiple logging platforms (Warrior, Lee Premier, CSS).

Mackenzie Wierenga

Geotechnical Field Technician

Mackenzie Wierenga, the eldest son of founder Steve Wierenga, joined That Wireline Guy in January 2025 as a key member of the operational team. With a passion for geotechnical innovation, he has rapidly advanced in training for towed Transient Electromagnetic (tTEM) surveys and hands-on operation of the eLogging unit, contributing to high-resolution groundwater mapping and subsurface data acquisition across Western Canada.

His dynamic learning journey encompasses geotechnical data acquisition, advanced processing techniques, and robust data management in a fast-evolving technological landscape. Mackenzie's hands-on approach ensures seamless field operations, from deploying portable UTV/helicopter-capable winches to analyzing real-time logs with CSS Geotechnical systems—delivering thermal plots, field reports, and full-color documentation for client well files.

Drawing on family roots in the industry, Mackenzie leads the Water Well Geophysical eLogging and TEM Surveying group, blending youthful energy with a commitment to precision and sustainability in resource exploration.
